An intumescent strip is a fire safety product that expands when exposed to heat (up to 20x its original size). This action seals gaps around doors to prevent fire and smoke (even hot and noxious gases) from spreading. Most strips feature sodium-silicate or graphite-based materials in PVC carriers. Such products are essential in curbing the incidence of residential fires (around 34,000 incidents happen yearly across the UK), a few of which could have been perpetrated by burglars (with the UK’s overall burglary rate at 215,000).
